DMM Leadership Development: "A Long Line of Obedience in the Same Direction"-paraphrased Eugene Peterson

 “Prayer is the work.”

Training Indigenous Leaders: DMM Leadership Development

“So, what I am wanting is for you to let me know if you all have any local workers in your network with whom I could partner for this UUPG? I am only looking for highly mature, thoroughly tested, thoroughly impervious to temptation, godly ones who know suffering and can take it,” ventured a foreign missionary from another company recently. Interestingly so, he offered no involvement in the process of coming alongside and developing those whom we might know who might feel called to that particular UUPG.

The bit playful part of me wanted to offer the response, “so, what you are looking for is a ready made disciple like the Apostle Paul?” Thankfully, grace and mercy in the nudging of the Holy Spirit’s conviction prevented the above response.

In Matthew 9:37-38, Jesus admonishes the disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

There are many times where the fruit goes limp or wanting for lack of harvesters in  UPG areas. You too, if you were serving in an Unreached People Group, most likely would concur.

We come from a society, in western culture, broad strokes wise, where instant gratification is the norm. Whatever we desire can either be acquired, desired, or inspired by all that is available in our day. Fast food, drive through, is main course for millions. Our western cultures crave the satisfaction of every longing, every impulse. We want information, just the sound bites, not the depths. And we want whatever we want instantaneously. Not later, not in a process.  At least, that would be the tendency of my flesh, maybe not yours.

Not so, the process of the development of disciple-makers in the Disciple Making Movements process or in any ministry approach really.  When you start from scratch, many times you can feel shredded by the process of pouring into others’ lives. But then again that is what we do as disciples of the Lord Jesus: we make reproducing disciples. We need to follow the patterns Jesus laid forth in selecting others whom we pour the Christ life into. Faithful, available, teachable ones are the ones whom God led Paul to disciple. Select well, by the Holy Spirit’s leading.

In the DMM process, we often start with the lump of clay. That pretty much sums up the condition of each of our hearts before God molds us into Christ-likeness displays, obedience based followers, and worship thirsty disciple-makers. He is about Himself being made famous through us, his desired vessels of honor. His honor.

Much to the consternation of many a western culture background missionary that is a long process. Discipleship of oikos and the respective indigenous facilitators/leaders of them is a messy deal. Be assured that there are no ready-made trained disciple-makers in UPG areas.

The Apostle Paul was not ready made, lest we forget that transformational power of the Holy Spirit reality. That is precisely one of the main reasons why these groups remain Unreached. There are few going to them. Even those near culture Christians have various bondage areas, which need the redemptive power of Christ in order to walk in freedom and to become vessels of honor. Isn’t that true of each of us?

Shy not from the process of disciple-making with those whom God is raising up in the near culture laborers alongside the indigenous Persons of Peace (Luke 10-POP’s) and their respective oikos.

Discovery Bible Study (DBS) style disciple-making helps to reduce patron-client dependences, which are rampant in Asian cultures. I love that reality. I love that from the get go, as we partner with the Holy Spirit and God’s Word, we invite others to become effective in facilitating others and themselves to engage with ABBA in this way. As they become those who desire to be obedient worshipers of Jesus then the DNA can be set, which can then birth the development of Apostle Paul types.

DMM: Move with the Movers, Love the Lingerers

Women are hugely gifted in relational acumen. However, one of the greatest hindrances I observe in training/coaching women is in the area of “how” to lovingly be more intentional in those relationships which they pursue. To move with the movers is to follow Jesus' patterned disciple making: finding potential Persons of Peace, training/coaching fellow laborers, and in making of reproducing disciple-makers who love, hear and obey him.

In answering the oft asked question in CPM efforts, “Lord, what needs to be done?”, we need to be intentional to equip women (and men) to more effectively learn how to leverage the gift of relational acumen for God’s glory. When we pay close attention to the process which Jesus Modeled-Equipped-Watched-Left/Lettered/Coached on-goingly, we see this pesky little phrase “shake the dust off your feet”. (Luke 9:5, Matthew 10:14) Then, there is the practice, which looks like a “norm” for Paul and the other “sent ones” whom we observe in Acts 13:49-51, obeying this command of Jesus.

The concept of Move with Movers, love the Lingerers is generated from these patterned norms of Jesus with His disciples. The following are some tips on the “how” of “shaking the dust off your feet” in existing and future relationships, while you listen to the Spirit of God to discern who to invest in as a potential Movement Catalyst.

• figure out your context and come up with an acceptable excuse…
• aim to have 5 people you are pursuing…even if someone is not open if they are willing to go through the stories process then that is a great foundation for us to be sharpened in order to continue to train and equip others
• context is important, feelings are hard…when Jesus said “shake off the dust off of your feet,” this is tough
• POP’s are out there and they want to be found!

Consider the Following Ways to be more strategic in relationship investments

Frequently asked questions for the area of relationships and who to pursue?

1. When getting started in CPM/DMM implementation in an area where there are not yet near-neighbor DMM Catalysts with whom to partner, how many new ladies should we realistically try to meet on a weekly/monthly basis?

Suggestions:
  • 15 contacts, offer the DBS stories to them,
  • Share oral “pocket story” from the Word, e.g, Jesus calming the wind and waves, Healing woman with issue of blood, deliverance of demoniac,
  • Start with a Felt Need DBS story set or go straight to DBS core Creation to Christ story set,
  • Approach people you already know in your spheres of connections,
  • Maximize your schedule, (as you go on errands leave a few minutes early, create margins, deliberately choose the longest line, the most crowded spot, the waiting gathering holes, bathe in prayer, lifestyle making disciples is lifestyle creating margins which weave in all the rich pieces of your season of life)
  • Be intentional, be deliberate
  • Set a faith goal, ….talk to 2 people each day in search of POP’s is one idea…take kids on prayer walk together and ask the Lord lead you all to those seeking Him. If single, borrow the kids of a teammate, or set a time where you go out with married gals, while husbands watch the kids.

2. How do we avoid putting pressure on women to be meeting scores of new local women and follow up with them?

Women missionaries want to be found! My experience is that women who are called to the field want to be more engaged than they are presently. They may not have the support from their husbands, their Team Leaders, or their agencies. Husbands need to be coached into ways which bring their wives into points of engagement in this process. That means that they can be a great asset in helping their wives to flourish as they free up time for their wives to engage, to be part of the team meetings, the DMM coaching/trainings. The men on the team will also have a significant role in seeing that the single women are being equipped and coached as CPM Catalysts, as well as making sure they are intricately involved in strategy discussions.

For married couples, tag team mindset to love and invest together in their kids is a great model to pursue. Assume that women want to discover their unique voice in the kingdom of God for His glory among UPGs. Grace abounds, I have gone through all of these stages of life: seasons of raising children from infancy to launch them to being empty nesters. The End Vision informs all. The goal is to delight in the Father and walk in that intimacy, out of the overflow of that daily practice of basking in Him, His Word, we are to both/and be and do the heart of the Father. Often times it comes down to helping women to consider what time they have available to be engaged in the essential of making reproducing disciples. It behooves each organization who desires to see whole peoples reached to help coach women laborers in their various seasons in order to make the most of it for God’s glory.

Tapestry Weaving of Relationships

My husband and I, along with our local partner CPM Teams see relational, emotional healthiness, deliverance, healings as fairly frequent needs. Each time we model, we try and think to the 4th generation in all aspects of what we MAWL. Emotional needs, physical needs, relational brokenness, financial burdens are spiked about every 3 months in the lives of those whom we know. For those POPs we search for outside our relational connections, we try and model lifestyle looking for POPs, anyone, anywhere, anytime. For example, in our zero generation of national partners, 20 out of 25 of them have walked through emotional healing for sexual abuse from childhood.

We use emotional healing DBS format material.

• Model to local partners what it is to see women engaged in making disicples who reproduce
• Be careful what we model to them…in our context, people tolerate noisy children, …children come in and out all the time,…you go with it…they are not segmented out…

We see relational, emotional healthiness, deliverance, healings as fairly frequent needs.

Consider your relationship pool from the perspective of seeing the Holy Spirit equip you to leverage for His glory. To Move with the Movers, spend time looking for Persons of Peace whom God is raising up and investing time discipling them to commitment and to reproduce. To Love the Lingerers, you are intentionally "shaking the dust off your feet", but loving them well while keeping the door open as you express to them that any time they have a stirring to want to discover more of God's heart for them then please contact you. For those whom you meet in your circle of relationships in the category of Lifestyle (As you are going), you are looking for those whom God is stirring with longings for His ways.

Be intentional. Be tethered to the Word of God. Be empowered by the compelling lead of the Holy Spirit.
Be expectant that God will give you tangible ways to both demonstrate and declare the ways of Jesus. Be confident in the Lord's tender ways as you learn to move on to those relationships whom God is stirring with longings for their households to come to know Jesus.

DMM: On-Ramp Felt Needs DBS sets: Beyond the Eyes

Sample On-Ramp Felt Needs DBS Story Set

DBS Beyond the Eyes-God’s Heart for Women (and their households)

Seeing goes beyond a look, a glance. Beyond the face, we see life. Beyond the mask covering, there is potential for deeper connection. God sees us through and through. There is no veil too thick, no covering too obscuring in which the All-Knowing God cannot pierce. Man was created in the image of God, both male and female. (Gen. 1:27).

Sin has separated every man who has ever lived, who will ever live. And we know from God’s Word that Man is only made alive in that image as one aligns with the reality that apart from God’s forgiveness, mercy and grace, found in Jesus Christ alone, man will never enjoy life abundant, life eternal as God intended.

For years I have asked the Lord to give me His look, His glance, His piercing radiance as I meet Muslim women. Their “cadar” eyes are a clearly defined road map to the condition of their hearts. Sinners, separated from the one and only Holy God. And such was the condition of my own heart prior to the stunning grace and mercy which the Holy Spirit initiated to draw me to Jesus. (Ephesians 2)

Veil-covered, mesh lenses through which they have been trained to see the world, denote an obvious reminder of the eternally separated life. These veils which Muslim women wear are a tangible prompt to intercede for their salvation. Would that they come to know the beauty of a life laid bare before the Father. To be naked and unashamed before a Holy God, is only made possible by the only One worthy to tear the veil. The veil which is ripped asunder, the chasm between God Almighty, Holy One, and mankind born in sin, is only made possible through Christ’ righteousness imputed to us through the power of the cross, burial and resurrection.

To conquer the grave consequence of eternal separation from a Holy God, to rip the veil asunder, to bring life eternal and life abundant causes our hearts to know that through this atonement for our sins, we are able to be laid bare before our Holy God.

DBS Beyond the Eyes

Beyond the Eyes

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!…-Matthew 6:21-23

You don’t get wormy apples off a healthy tree, nor good apples off a diseased tree. The health of the apple tells the health of the tree. You must begin with your own life-giving lives. It’s who you are, not what you say and do, that counts. Your true being brims over into true words and deeds.-Luke 6:45 (The Message)

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?
-Jeremiah 17:9

...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,-Romans 3:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.-Romans 6:23

To say that Madiah was intrigued by her new two American friends would be an understatement. Was she curious as to the difference they described in the life they have been walking with Jesus, as their Lord and Savior? How could the interactions with these infidels be so heartwarming, she must have pondered. What made them different?

Madiah and two of our recent summer teamers from the University of Texas and Texas A&M, joined me for tea one afternoon. While translating for Hna and Pyn, they shared powerfully their personal story of God’s story in their lives and how they were drawn to be transformed as Jesus’ disciples. By the now, in this second meeting with Madiah, the Holy Spirit was stirring her heart to discover more of this relationship with God in Christ. Madiah asked to hear more.

Using the Discover App https://discoverapp.org, we read together one of what we call “felt needs-on-ramp” Discovery Bible Stories. Usually after a bit of filtering we invite the person and their household to discover more of God through a basic Creation to Christ story set. With this fully veiled SaSumBi woman, we felt led to share Matt. 6:21-23. We walked through the usual process of 8 Discovery Questions. When we find potential people of peace and their households/friends group whom God is drawing, there are usually a few distinct ways we can know based upon the patterns which Jesus modeled.

“Person of Peace” (PoP) (Matthew 10, Luke 10) (W.O.O.L.Y)

  • WELCOMES / HOSTS us – often feeds the messengers, typically invites messengers to stay in their home,
  • OPENS their Oikos (family/group/community/network) to the Good News (not necessarily the disciple-maker gets into the oikos but sometimes the PoP is passing on the gospel)
  • LISTENS to You-listens to the message and the messengers as they share about God /a new spiritual message. (Not necessarily receiving the message, but willing to listen to it.) So obviously this is a LOST person.

We continued… “Madiah, as followers of Isa AlMasih, we know that He has ALL power and authority over darkness. In the Bible, Isa Al Masih states that He is the Light of the world and in Him there is no darkness. My friends, Hna, Pyn, and I are followers of Isa Al Masih. We know that He reveals where there is darkness and no light. The Word of God also teaches that EVERY person is sinful and separated from God, the One and only Holy One. Do you want us to share what we see as we look into your eyes?" “Yes.” I ventured, “Madiah, I see in your eyes a woman who expresses a hunger for the Light of Isa Al Masih, but that you feel hindered in your attempts to that end. You are held back in a desire to discover more of who this Isa is in the Word of God. I see that you are one who covers with your veil but you wonder if God really sees you. Is this accurate?” “Yes.”

  • Pray for Madiah and her household as we follow up in the next DBS story. (John 6:44-45, 2 Peter 5:9)
  • Pray for reproducing local leaders to be strengthened in leadership development, tethering themselves to the Word, living lives worthy to be followed, and walking in Holy Spirit-empowered ways. Pray for dramatic answers to prayer leading to breakthroughs among the SaSumBi.

DMM: The Role of Listening Prayer

 Hearing God through Listening Prayer

The Role of Listening Prayer

“Over the last twenty years, I have led believers around the world through an in-depth study of Paul’s journeys to learn from his example and apply these principles in our ministries. Invariably, the primary observation that emerges is that, while Paul had a clear path of ministry and strong discipleship processes, he was led by the Spirit. Paul knew what to do but the Spirit showed him where to do it, with whom, and in whose strength.

And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them. So, passing by Mysia, they went down to Troas. And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them. (Acts 16:6–10, emphasis added)

Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me(Col. 1:28–29, emphasis added)

Paul and his team lived the very way Jesus predicted they would: the Spirit Walk. An unpredictable path paved with predictable steps.”

The above is used with permission from Spirit Walk by Steve Smith, 2414 Ventures, 2018

“With new churches/new disciples, we just tell them to pray and ask God how they should apply that week's story, and then they do. We use the verses in John 10 as the basis for being able to go to Him, listen and then obey.” Robin Smith (no relation to Steve Smith quoted above)

Listening prayer invites God to speak to our hearts and shape our thoughts and plans. As we listen in community, greater clarity often emerges. All that we hear is tested by His Word.

DMM: Crazy, Audacious, Extraordinary Prayer

Read and reflect on the following prayer walking and fishing for POP experience from on-site workers:

Extraordinary Prayer

"How do you feel about the building of this Islamic Training Center?" I queried. The young SaSumBi boy stood before us quite befuddled. At the mention of the desire to hear his thoughts, he scrambled for his cell phone.

For a week's time frame, we recently prayed and fasted over the SaSumBi UPGs in partnership with our national teams. On this particular day of the fasting time we ventured a prayer walk time around the recent construction project of the Provincial governor's making. A $500 million U.S. dollar valued Islamic Training Centre was our destination this day.

As we prayed we sensed the parallels of this project with the Tower of Babel. One of the directions of prayer seemed to ask the Father to reveal to the SaSumBi Muslims the ugly faces of the spirits of Islam which hold sway over them…that upon coming near to this building there would be a visual appearance and revelation of that darkness to which they are in bondage.

The little SaSumBi boy we encountered on the perimeter of the project begged our attention. After asking him the question of how he felt in regards to the building, his hand phone was his answer. He said that when he looks at the building, he sees the image of what he captured on the outside of the building's pillars. He explained that he sees a demonic image each time he looks the way of the Islamic Training Center. The photo he showed us was his personal proof.

We saw sketchy blurry images. However, the greater clarity was given that we are to pray with extraordinary anticipation that God will reveal to the hearts of those in bondage that which keeps them there. And that God is a God of no compromise. He will not give His glory to another. Ever. We have this confidence that He will fulfill His promises. Resultantly, though doubts may come, our prayers will be transformed in the process.

Intercession Points:
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal where the SaSumBi gather to seek power, favor, and peace from their existing spiritual forces/worship centers.
  •  Ask the Holy Spirit to draw 50 Islamic SaSumBi Imams and their households and communities which they influence to fall in love with and obey Jesus as followers by the end of 2017.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to lead you to pray God’s promises to smash, in Jesus' name, those centers which they have erected to replace the one and only true God.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to prompt the on-site workers to more effectively posture themselves to discern where the people are gathering as the SaSumBi seek false gods.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to cause all on site workers to be quickened to be expectant in lifestyle looking for Persons of Peace...Acts 16:10-15- Lydia, John 4- The Woman at the Well…

CPM: The Hunt for Red October (The Hunt for Persons of Peace)

The film version of The Hunt for Red October chronicled the intentional search and deliberate tracking of a rogue Russian submarine in post Cold War 1980's. The determination of the said vessel commander's true intent filled the storyline with much intrigue. The hero of the story, Jack Ryan, had studied the movements, the words spoken, and the life history of that Russian commander. Based upon Jack's understanding of the character of the Russian commander, he pursued.

The search for Persons of Peace, which is based upon the model Jesus modeled/commanded his disciples to appropriate in Matthew 10, Luke 9 & 10 is our pattern. As we grow in the knowledge of the heart of the Father, as empowered by the Holy Spirit, we will have lenses to see and understand whom the Holy Spirit is preparing as the POP. We will move into this deliberate pursuit based upon our daily embrace of the reality that the love of Christ compels us to be intentional in the purposes of Christ.

To see a Church Planting Movement (CPM)/Disciple Making Movement (DMM) launched is to trust in the intent of the Father. For His fame and renown, we pursue making disciples of those whom He is preparing and their respective households.

A colleague in another mission field area of UPGs wrote the following insight:

I do appreciate your prayers for relationships and POP in particular - actually, I need to be better about praying for POP. It's been really slow-going it seems. I've hung out just once or twice really with each of these girls... Initiating and praying is really all I can do since we don't have a common connecting point right now. I know it's just been 2 1/2 months, it's just hard to know what "progress" is supposed to look like at this point. I am really excited to begin DBS (Discovery Bible Study) with whoever the Lord leads us to and am eager to begin, I know that it could take some time though.

A common statement for those of us who feel called to implement CPM approach is, "Whatever it takes, Lord, to see a CPM launched among this UPG for Your glory." I would add to this statement, "Not only whatever it takes, Lord, but however long it takes to see multiplying worshipers from among this UPG." Bottom line is, the hunt for Persons of Peace does take time and intentionality, along with loads of trust and obey. A key biblical paradigm to be embraced...one must talk to a whole lot of people in order to find those whom God is preparing to open their households, as households of peace.

Know the heart of the Father in daily pursuit. Intimacy with Christ, first and foremost, is our greatest pursuit. Out of the overflow of this intimacy we will know the move of the Spirit of God in greater measure. This has everything to do with finding the POP and their respective households. Know the Master commander's heart, words, and intent and you will know His ways.
